There was no ATO position on either the M1 and M3 , yes it was noted on the resopal plate at controller handle but never istalled.
Only Item ever installed was the ATO powersupply (it also controlled markerlights), a screwed up ATO supply would make the markerlights fade in and out at rapid pace.
The M series cars have 4 power possitions, P1-P2-P3- P4, they control the max steps on the motorized cam controller.
the basic steps are:
P1 = series only, P2 is series/parralel.
P3 is parralel, P4 is parralel with field shunting.
The Harlem/hudson equipment have stepless P wire brake, the New Haven equipment has a 7 step Westcode brake, with 7 brake possitions plus emergency.
