It's not clear what went wrong to cause today's collision. That said, FRA does have a rule regarding certain classes of track to have ATC at 80+ mph. (Of course, with cases like Chase, MD and Mount Vernon, NY, not even ATC works if your engineer (and in the latter case, the dispatchers) is a drug addict who's high). Possibly, especially with rail traffic projected to increase, lower rated classes of track - regardless of what's being hauled - should have their interlocking designs scrutinized and use ATC. |
