I just noticed a oddity about the R36 GE cars (9558-up). For some year after rebuilding, many lacked MTA/NYCT logos, while the WE units (9346-9523) had them.

Note the following:

9615 at CI being rebuilt in 1985 has just been repainted red and has a new-style two-tone "M" logo:

9718 in 1988, ahortly after being rebuilt and repainted. Note the fresh paint, "M" logo, LCD "LOCAL/EXP" indicators and original "INDENTRA" apparatus. By this point the first red R33 MLs were hitting the road.

(For comparsion, here's 9560 with a blue "M" logo in red, but prior to rebuild)

The following view between the early 1990s and 1996 show no logos on the GEs:

Between late 1996 and 1998 all GE R36s had "pac-man" MTA NYC Subway logos installed.

It appears that most of the R36s recieved "M" logos when rebuilt but lost them in the early 90s. Why? The WE R36s did not lose them.
