Why does it have to be the most annoying liberal(s) taking up this fight? This is an ideal conservative cause, an overzealous government trampling on individual rights.

The individual rights wing of the conservative movement has been pretty dormant for a long time. With a few brief exceptions, since the Republican Party agreed to abandon Reconstruction in order to get Hayes elected president when Tilden had actually won.
