Although the reasons for the red paint served more than aesthetic purpose, it was a big part of their character and definitely became a symbol of New York and the subway for many years as it has been popularized in art, movies, television (SNL's occasionally used subway-car mock up looks like a redbird interior) and even video games (Cruisin' World had a redbird pass over a Bronx highway). I don't know if the R-142s or many other car-types for that matter will ever achieve quite that degree of recognition. |
