To start with, we're talking cosmetics and uniform design features. The R142 has little to do with R143/R160 class cars.
Now let's go to manufacturing: Kawasaki won the R160 contract and used existing tooling (R143) to produce the R160 carbody....biggest part of a contract car...you can change out trucks/propulsion/pneumatics/amenities but changing out carbody design is like scrapping a car design in Detroit.....MTA wants uniformity in the fleet.

Bombardier won MTA contracts for M7/M7A EMUs but lost to Kawasaki for M8 dual-mode. Bombardier will get M9 contract....has tooling. Kawasaki lacks. All trains will look alike and work alike by 2020.
