The entire line was supposed to be used for subway service, the northern part was never supposed to be abandoned. In fact, it was NEVER formally abandoned, it was just put into "disuse". That's why the line was never scrapped, and all the rails, etc remained.Money was not available to convert the whole line at the time, so they chose the cheaper version connecting it to the Liberty El. It wss supposed to eventually taken completely over by the subway. |
