MTA with escalators and elevators is so bad, they need a quite radical evaluation of what's gone wrong. This has been a problem as far back as I can recall, i.e., 20+ years.

A few years back I went to a presentation about the SAS at the Transit Museum. One of the things that the architects who were present talked about were inclinators. These are basically elevators that run on an incline so that they can run parallel to escalators. Apparently they are used in Europe, and it was everyone's belief that this is a better way to go. There was one condition, however, that moved the SAS architects to choose to go with elevators rather than inclinators. That is that the MTA has yet to prove that they can reliably take care of elevators and escalators, so what happens when you introduce a relatively exotic third type of technology? They did not know the answer, but they seemed afraid to find out.
