There's no statistic that is more telling about crime in NYC than the murder rate. In the 80's it fluctuated in the neighborhood of 2000-2500 per year. Today it is usually around 600 per year (2001 excluded, obviously).

Granted, that isn't a subway number -- but it does put statements like "crime is rampant" in perspective.
