I agree with you 100%. It really doesn't cost the fed that much money to keep that statistic available.

While our trade debt-in and of itself - is not really that important, or government debt is. When the federal government runs a high debt, its supposed to have a negative macroeconomic effects. It hasn't. Why? Because our trade debt has placed a lot of US currency in the hands of foreign governments. What do they do with this money? They buy the US bonds that finance our debt. If foreign governments stop buying our bonds, we're royally screwed.

I think that the trade debt/ national debt relationship is the real reason why M3 is no longer published, but I could be wrong.
