He was an astute businessman - he was at the right place at the right time and knew how to make deals. IIRC MS-DOS which started it all was not even his invention - he knew IBM was working on a personal computer and provided an operating system he purchased from someone else. In fact the person who created the OS only got a fixed price from Gates for it - the actual inventor never profited from its subsequent success. |
