Also unlike some sections of the LIRR which have single tracks for trains in both directions - the SIR is double tracked from end to end. As I understand it generally, each track is used for one direction, where there is little "wrong railing" operations with passengers.

(I am not completely sure about the morning rush hours, I read a forum report about "wrong rail operations" on the SIR but I have not seen it in practice. There does not seem to be large time gaps in the current schedule for such operations. The schedule makes it appear that trains travel in both directions continously without gaps. Most of my own trips on SIR are non-peak - so I have no direct evidence of wrong-rail operations. So while I do not think they exist, I await information from those more in the know.)
