If you've worked the R or overnight N, you may have noticed a noticeable indentation on the right-hand side tunnel wall after departing Whitehall heading into Montague tube.

Ah, I knew there was another one I'd forgotten. Thanks to Howard for helping me remember.

Leaving Whitehall Street - South Ferry southbound into the Montague Street Tunnel, you start curving sharply to the left. Before you get to the junction with the Nassau Street Line, if you look to the right, you'll see what looks like a large opening in the tunnel, that's deep enough as though there's a track coming up from some lower level. When I first saw it, I thought it was the Nassau track coming up to join the tunnel, but then I remembered that the Nassau track joins from the left, not the right. And in any case, the Nassau connection is past the curve, further down the tunnel.

So what we have is some large, lower space to the right of the train as it's going through the curve. This might be hard to see from an (R) train (unless you're lucky catch an R-32), so you should ride at the front of an R-40 (W) train around 8:50 PM, when the last three southbound (W) trains go through to Brooklyn.
