Lion is going back too far. It WAS a premier railroad in the New York Central's heyday...until the 1950's. Enter Penn Central and the bankrupt Pennsylvania RR and bankrupt New York Central, and throw in the unwanted total basket case New Haven RR, and Penn Central was a disaster from the get go.Lion is missing an entire era. It's not like we jumped from 1953 to 1983. Conrail didn't want the commuter operation when it was formed in 1976, and was FORCED to operate it. While it may have been better than the Penn Central days, it was only slightly so. The MTA had it's work cut out for it in 1983..... The LIRR had it's own problems, but was already owned by the MTA since the 60's. The MTA didn't need to worry about the LIRR in the 80's, but MN needed LOTS of attention. That's why by 1990, MN was all shiney and new looking and the LIRR began to need the help. |
