HISTORY LESSON:

1) The LIRR used to use STEAM LOCOMOTIVES
2) The cars were heated with STEAM
3) F-M Consolidations had steam generators: no problem.
4) ALCO Centuries had steam generators: no problem.
5) Old MU cars replace older steam cars: Old MU cars never had steam connections, they never needed any steam.
6) Steam Generators on the ALCOs were surplus, HEP power of some sort from somewhere was required.
7) ALL OF THE ALCO Centuries (save the last four which did remain on the property longer) were leased units and the lease had expired: SOMETHING had to be purchased: Enter the GP38s. These did not need steam generators, the steam heated passengers cars were disappearing. They did not need HEP: the LIRR had already embarked upon creating Generator-Cab cars, ergo: freight locomotives would work just fine. (This is also how my railroad moves the old passenger cars.)
8) Time passes, it is now time to replace the cars, and you may as well replace the locomotives too with something that was designed from the git-go to work together. The last time *that* had occurred on the LIRR the locomotives were steam powered.
