Electrification requires a large capital investment in infrastructure. Clearly needed for busy lines, but hard to justify rationally for (say) Greenport or Montauk. So what do you do - close those lines down completely?

Dare i suggest - very quietly - DMUs?

It's a pity a couple of links aren't there:
  • Manorville - Eastport (abandoned)
  • Port Jefferson - Wading River (abandoned) - Riverhead (never built)

Then it would be a simple matter of:
  • Electrify:
    • Huntington - Northport Junction - Northport (okay, this is a bit anachronistic)
    • Ronkonkoma - Riverhead
    • Bethpage - Babylon - Speonk
  • Build a DMU Maintenance Facility in the Riverhead area
  • Run the following DMU services
    1. Northport Junction - Port Jefferson - Wading River - Riverhead
    2. Riverhead - Greenport
    3. Riverhead - Manorville (reverse) - Eastport - Speonk - Montauk
