Well, first thing, the LIRR is not going completely electric. That's railfan fantasy.Next, it's not really ridiculous for the LIRR to run some through passenger trains on the line, as the mainline is pretty cogessted rush hours, so it's nice to have another way to go for some scheduled trains. As for the line's covenants, requiring passenger service, I am sure if they really had to, they would be able to rewrite the wording....but of course, legally, that may destroy the LIRR's original charter on the line. |
