I have always thought of subways as networks (and surface rail lines too!):

Why did they build what was built where? Why 2 tracks, 4 tracks? Why did they put the switches where they did?

When I travel by train, I’m always looking out for the branch lines and sidings and wonder where they go. Around me there are the remnants of rails that went from the NE Corridor to the Delaware and Raritan canal for coal transportation. The tracks have been ripped up but you can definitely see where the ROW went.

To take your phrase further: wheels though, get you there, but it’s the track they run on!
