Well, if I filed a suit at all, it would be in small claims court, which has a filing fee of $15 and doesn't involve lawyers most of the time. (If I need a lawyer, I could ask a family member, perhaps; we've got a ton of lawyers in the family, though none are in the right area of law.) In any case, I'd be suing the cop responsible for the deletion, not the city, since the cop was, well, responsible for the deletion. It's not like she'd be unable to pay $30 (or $45, if I also try to recover the filing fee), and it wouldn't cause bankruptcy or anything. I can afford $15, and if I win, she can afford $30 or $45. I don't know how handy the software would be in general, though, since I'm utterly paranoid about accidentally deleting something, and have been known to octuple-check what I have on my computer under differing conditions just to be sure nothing's being lost. |
