The Gun Hill Road Station on White Plains Road was constructed in 1916 and was opened in 1917. The two tier station structure was built to accomadate the junction of the northern extenson of the 3rd Ave El on Webster Ave to this point.

The northern extension of the 3rd Ave El was built in 1918 and opened in 1920.
The Bronx portion of the 3rd Ave El remained in use until 1973 as shown below.

The lower level of the Gun Hill Road station remained unused until 2006.
The former lower level 3rd Ave El platforms and the remnant of the connecting structure to Gun Hill Road were removed and the station complex was rebuilt to this current configutration.

So, another remnant of NYC Elevated Railway History is gone. However, the former connecting rampjunction north of the station remains as evidence of its connection to the 3rd Av El.
