How is a three-seat ride better than a one-seat ride? Making one transfer is not a big deal, but having to make two or more? That is a big deal, especially when each transfer is to an overcrowded line. When you have to make two or three transfers, you start to look for alternate ways to get to work. I wouldn't be surprised if there are many commuters from Middle Village, Glendale or Maspeth, who prefer to take express buses or drive into Manhattan via the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. If you need to get to Midtown Manhattan and you take the M to the L, you have to transfer at least one more time, unless you work near 14th St. Come on, most M line commuters aren't going to ride all the way down to Fulton St for the A, C, 2 or 3 trains or Chambers St for the 4 or 5. They see that L as a shortcut for getting to those trains at a point closer to their jobs in Midtown. That's why they cram on to the L. Combining the M and V trains will turn a lot of three- and four-seat rides into one- and two-seat rides. |
