The real problem to me is this:Many "old school" New Yorkers like myself who would never tolerate what's going on now moved out of NYC 20+ years ago when the rents began going up to what are now insane levels in some cases. Many of the people who live in New York now are don't have the multiple generations of family that previously lived there, in many instances you now have people who didn't grow up in New York and are more like people in other parts of the country who think a terrorist attack is more likely to hit in the middle of the country than New York (notable for instance where Churchill Downs has forbidden backpacks, coolers and the like to be brought to that faclity in on Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby days whereas the New York Racing Association HAS CONTINUED to allow backpacks, coolers and the like with only relatively minor restrictions on Belmont Stakes Day). That may be playing in these proposed new rules, as there are many more people now living in New York than 20 years ago that are more easily paranoid about terrorism in a way "old school" New Yorkers, who dealt with stuff long before 9/11 would never get paranoid about (and what happened in London this past weekend didn't exactly help matters). |
