Back in the early 70's I used to commute on the LIRR to school in the city (Pace U) from Mineola. As I was just as much a railfan then as now (of course with no internet I thought it was just me!!) I would take the LIC branch as often as I could. In those days all trains to/from LIC used the lower Montauk. As I was a Pettycoat Junction/Green Acres fan that line was the closest thing to the Hooterville Cannonball I knew of. And getting on at LIC was fun as it was the only time I was legally allowed to walk through a train yard. In those days the diesel coaches had manually operated doors so you could stand in the vestibule with the door open.
