The older cars WERE better on the weekends, when I was railfanning around the city, but on a day-to-day (riding them to work and back, etc.) experience, they were smelly, uncomfortable, and hot in the summer and cold in the winter..I think when answering these questions, one has to look at it two ways: as a railfan, and as a paying customer using the system the way it's intended: There are really two answers to the questions, based on the two mutually-exclusive criteria...let's not forget, even though our hobby is the subway, its purpose is not to entertain us, it's a public transit system to get people where they are going, we come second.
