Overreaction?Mercury Spill Shuts Down Pershing Square Station (AP) LOS ANGELES A Metro downtown train station will be closed until Sunday because of a mercury spill, authorities said. The spill at the Metro Red Line Pershing Square Station was reported by a passenger shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday. Sheriff's Deputy Amore Smith of the Office of Homeland Security Transit Services Bureau said the station was closed shortly after the substance was confirmed to be mercury. "We shut the system down basically but the trains kept passing by," he said. He said the Metropolitan Transit Authority called a hazardous materials crew they contract with to clean up the spill. Smith said they were still investigating where the substance came from. No injuries were reported. |
