Second, when the brakes were released, the escaping air left with a distinct whistle. What about the braking system had to be changed post-GOH that eliminated the whistle? I remember that sound, perhaps the most distinctive sound outside the R38-42 "Darth Vader" brakes. Side question: The R-44s pre-GOH had the same braking system as the LIRR M-1s. Why was the braking system changed on the -44s but not the M-1s? My ears tell me the R44 brakes sound virtually identical now as opposed to pre-GOH, at least when they're released. |
