Not sure *what* it is...

But ONE of them, was leading a 120 car train through town at a fairly rapid (50+) clip. I thought wow, one locomotive for all of that. Then I saw that there was another one of them at the rear end of the train.

Two locomotives per coal train out here is common. More and more BNSF is putting locos at both ends of the consist. Especially since you can run them by remote control. I suppose that would make things easier at the dumper. Engineer could get off of the lead locomotive, use the remote to drive it through the dumper, and then get onto the rear (now the front) locomotive, and take the train back to the coal fields. Eliminates the need for a huge loop, not that there is never enough space for said loop, since coal fired plants take up a lot of space, but they can sure as heck take up less space with this arrangement.
