So far, my investigation finds this statement to be inaccurate. As American Pig pointed out they have to suspect that a crime is, was, or is about to be committed. Furthermore, they can only ask you to identify yourself. The courts have said that you do not have to produce identification. You can state your name and are required to do nothing whatsoever beyond that. They can take you downtown and give you access to an attorney if they need more than that.Generally I agree with you, but given 9/11 and the after effects I had a bad feeling that giving him my ID in that circumstance could be to my detriment. I was afraid that I might end up on a list somewhere, and if the commander was accurate I was correct. |
