I recall it took them a little while to get around to actually pull the track up. First they stop using the Manhattan-bound, then they spiked the switches, then removed them, then finally took up the entire track.At some point after they single-tracked, they removed the signals, except (IIRC) entering 9th Avenue and Ditmas, and operated the line as an absolute block. A couple of other tidbits: most of the third rail was never covered, even though they switched to subway (BMT) section third rail, and the station platforms were wood to the end. The single-track Culver was also the only NYC subway line I knew where the conductor would buzz the motorman to stop even after starting to leave if there was a passenger running for train. Real Toonerville Trolley stuff. |
