The Atlantic Ave. line was connected to the Brighton line (when both were at street level) from 1878 to 1884. The LIRR stopped running its trains along the Brighton line in 1880 since it was a direct competitor to the Manhattan Beach line which the LIRR had then acquired. Brighton trains continued running from the Atlantic Ave. line until 1884, when the original agreement expired.

When the Altantic Ave. line was placed underground in 1903, the bellmouth was created in case there was ever a need to connect the two lines again.
