The conductor on the early morning western Montauk runs began to know me after a while. I had relatives near patchogue, and would usually go home, back to the city from patchogue. The early morning local began at Patchogue. At Jamaica the conductor would announce the stations. He would then walk through and ask where you were getting off. Sometimes they only made rolling stops (like someone does when they roll through a stop sign) if they knew no one was getting off, and if no one was waiting to get on.
By the time he used to know me a little, he would jokingly ask if we were going to "get off at the cemetery (Glendale), in the weeds (Fresh Pond), or if we were staying on until the end today...."
