A Long Night's Journey Back Home From 86/2nd |
|
Posted by heypaul on Sat Mar 29 09:06:36 2025 I caught a Q at 86 St/2 Ave about 6:30 Thursday evening. The conductor was very thorough in her announcements. She said the elevator at Union Square was being modernized and that passengers requiring it, should grab an R or W and go to City Hall station, where they could take an uptown R or W back to Union Square where the elevator was in service. Her announcements were very clear. Then at some point the T/O came on the PA to announce that because of congestion on the bridge we were going through the tube. We did that, but then it was announced because of a police action or a fire condition at Atlantic, we would be making local stops along 4th Ave to 36 St. I think the conductor announced that at Atlantic on the D N R an alternative would be to get a 2 or 3 to Franklin Ave, grab the Franklin Shuttle and go to Prospect Park and get a Q or B s/b. That didn't appeal to me for a number of reasons. It assumed that Q or B's would be making it through the problem area. Around Union St, I heard some people buzzing about getting off at 9th St and getting the F. I thought about a lot of stairs and passed on that idea, although as things turned out for me that would have been a good move. As we proceeded to 36 St, two D's passed us on the express track. But then I noticed one of the D's moving slowly. At 36 St, it was announced that we were going to run express to Stillwell. I assumed that would be on The West End and that it might be interesting. However, an N train pulled in and I opted for that. Actually it was a W train, that was hijacked into N service. We moved pretty good. Outside I was surprised to see an out of service train heading south on the n/b express track. Then it was announced that we would be terminating at Kings Highway. Not so good, as I had previously noticed on some of the stations display screens that due to switch problems at Stillwell, N service was experiencing serious delays. I got off at Kings Hwy and the N/W waited in the station for about 5 -10 minutes waiting for the signal to clear. Then an N arrived and I got on. At 86 St, the conductor said we would have to wait until a train pulled out of Stillwell. There were a lot of people waiting on the n/b platform for that to happen also. So I bailed out, hoping to catch a B4 bus or the F train. I took the F to Stillwell. And noticed an out of service D setting on other F train berth. I got my Q and waited about 10 minutes before it departed. At home, about 9 PM, I read on the MTA site that were still problems at Atlantic. N/B Q were turning around Prospect Park and B service had long been cancelled. |
