I remember thinking they replaced one old car with another. Even though the newest R9s were only about 30 years old at the time they were designed in the 20s for the IND so were barely a newer design than the standards. They had dim lighting, really uncomfortable plastic seats that replaced the originals, they groaned, they smelled and they left a puff of smoke as they pulled out of the station. Meanwhile the rest of the BMT/IND had been getting new cars. They did put a few sets of R42s on the LL though. |
