The grating above the closed exit on the South Side of Queens Blvd is still there. The staircase is still there and the grating was recently opened by contractors to allow for construction materials being brought in for the Elevators currently being built within the station. One night when construction workers were using the closed entrance, I stuck my head in there and looked. Not much to see except the original IND exit tiling on the walls and steps. I wanted to take a picture however the contractors were quite busy within that space and didn't want to make a scene. They're currently building four elevators throughout the station, one for each platform at the middle to the mezzanine above, one at the end of the Hoffman Passageway and another at the rear entrance below the Highway overpass by 92 St. The construction of these elevators currently allows one to see the proposed space that would be used if Woodhaven Blvd was converted into an Express Station. The current local station platform wall is actually just a curtain wall, similar to Lex/63 before the 2nd Ave Line Platforms were opened up. There's only about a foot of space between the platform wall and actual tunnel wall, yet indeed there's a space. One more anomaly about Woodhaven... Try finding pictures of the station interior before the '97 renovation. I've only been able to find one on the web. |
