I remember when all of them were not air conditioned. But-- those cars had many more openable windows, and storm doors that stayed open, and (usually) working fans, so when the cars were moving there was always a breeze. Also, because none of the cars were air conditioned, the stations and tunnels weren't as hot as they are today. Getting into a car with broken air conditioning is much worse than getting into an old car that never had it. |
