By the time I became a M/M in late 1968, the auto roadway had already been closed in preparation for an industrial park, so the gates only had to be opened for passengers. Interestingly, the last place I worked as a towerman before becoming a M/M was the E 105th St gates. It was on the midnights and most of the time I kept the gates down so that trains could pass without interruption. I only had to open the gates for exiting passengers or if an entering passenger knocked on the bell that was on the gates to alert me to open them. |
