There's a whole list of signals for the loco whistle and the conductor's signal line from the coaches. When standing 2 toots for going forward, when running 2 toots to acknowledge 2 toots from the conductor. 3 toots for backing up, 4 toots is a call for signals from the crew on the ground. I need to re-read the book.One toot is reserved for stop because if any other part of the signal is lost or not heard then the safest action will be taken. That leaves our crossing signal as something other than a single blast. Oh and the last toot is more exactly before the crossing and continued until the crossing is occupied. Bill |
