I was told once although I’m not sure of the exact source that the IRT usually made every fourth station an express station regardless of its importance which may explain why Times Sq was not made an express stop on the original subway. The only reason that 96th St was made an express stop was because it was an important junction even though it didn’t fit the pattern. |
