I think some of those switchmen were new guys breaking in, before operating in revenue service.Others might simply have had seniority. Shorter trains were easier to patrol too. Safe for passengers. I agree they didn't save much money on mileage. Any savings were offset by labor. Overnight and weekend short trains were sufficient enough to save money. |
