My father was a motorman on the Flushing line, and back in the 1950s and 60s, the workforce was overwhelmingly Irish and Irish-American. My dad used to call the Irish-born ones "Hibernians." We were at Main Street one day, probably to go shopping at Gertz, at the time when the TA was lengthening the station to accommodate longer trains. As we were going upstairs, my dad ran into one of his Hibernian co-workers. I asked him what they were building at the end of the station.The Hibernian said to me, "Why they're building a subway to Ireland!" I must have been maybe 7 or 8 years old and totally believed him. |
