Posted by JOE @ NYCMTS - NYCTMG on Sun Jan 1 19:05:55 2023, in response to [PHOTOS] #1282 Was #817, posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Jan 1 07:39:41 2023. Hello Bill (Newkirk)THANKS for those 1282 car photos --- yes --- the unusual 16 window car basically following the 16 windows count of the original carbody of 6- 4 - 6 (total 16) spaced windows of car 75 as built new. I found in my files a photo of 817 when it was rebuilt in 1909 by TDC as a 16 window car. SEE BELOW. It is NOW APPARENT that this 1909 "as rebuilt new" photo shows the car still numbered 817 from its former center-door-motor-car days. Still bearing its 817 number as it was re-numbered when converted to center door trailer car around 1888 as renumbered from earlier # 75 when it was a 6-4-6 window-spacing trailer car type as built new in 1884. ![]() As I wrote earlier, # 817's body previously was different prior to 1908 - that being after it was center door modified and still a trailer around 1888 and motorized around 1901-2. Here BELOW is a photo (of my scratch built O Scale Model on my EL) of what 817 looked like by 1901-02 as a motor center door car. ![]() BELOW is the type of interior basically found in # 817 as a center door car --- this particular car shown BELOW actually being an ex Kings County Elevated RR Car # 516, converted in 1888 to center-door car... and itself motorized in 1901. By mid 1920's all center doors were sealed shut and wall seats inserted across their openings ![]() As I posted on this thread earlier, The reversible-backs seats for the 1909 TDC Co. rebuilt # 817, later renumbered by BMT in 1930 to # 1282, were duplicated from the style of the BRT 1300 series all motor convertible sides gate car reversible-backs-seating. As originally built, the car as # 75 in 1884 was a 6-4-6 window spaced car and had Manhattan Style seating - SEE PHOTO BELOW: ![]() Here below is the exterior body style of car # 75 as appeared when built new in 1884 until center door added around 1888 ![]() Well, this car as # 75, # 817, and # 1282, had a quite varied history and THREE body styles and changes. It lasted until 1955 as # 1282 .... but most ALL of its 800 series center door class of cars -- as shown of my own O Scale model of identical car # 849, were scrapped by 1930-31. Excepting a number of that style that were retained (some with roof trolley poles) as work motor horse cars for yard shunting and work trains. regards - Joe F |
