Posted by gbs on Tue Jul 5 16:52:53 2022, in response to Re: 149th St-Grand Concourse renamed to 149th St-Hostos, posted by r17-6599 on Tue Jul 5 09:17:35 2022. 23 St is the number name of Ely Ave, and 21 St is the number name of Van Alst Ave. Inexplicably at 23/Ely the black wall tiles show both 23 and Ely, but at 21/VanAlst they show only 21: On the Flushing Line's Queens Blvd viaduct, the stations (opened in 1917, possibly before the re-naming) originally showed only the name, not the number: 1960: Nowadays many #7 stations continue to show both, though from the hyphenated station signs you can't tell that "69 St - Fisk Av" and "90 St - Elmhurst Av" mean two different things. At 69 St both are names for the same street, but at 90 St those are two different streets that are both accessed at the station. By the way, Brooklyn's hyphenated "Clinton-Washington" and "Hoyt-Schermerhorn" on both the A and G mean completely different things. |
