After WWII began, Robert Moses got to wear yet another hat, as Scrap Commissioner. A crane in the 159th St yard lifted the selected car from the elevated yard to either a barge or tractor trailer, provided by the purchasers. The going rate was $600 for a trailer car and $1,200 for a motor one. This business continued for about 9 months until the wartime Office of Defense Transportation ordered Moses to stop. The ODT wanted to examine all of the remaining cars to see if any could be reused for use somewhere. Frustrated by the Feds, Moses abandoned the project completely. |
