The last 120 of the 620 M-1 were to convert the 44 T72 trailers to push-pull, scrap the 23 year old 62 double deckers, and scrap the 19 year old 20 MP70 "Wyer" cars that had an availability ratio of 97%.Then in 1972 he ordered another 150 M-1's from Vickers and GE to replace all remaining MP72 and MP75, which ran fine, and whose conversion to push-pull took until 1979. He never learned anything from anything. But 1,000 Arinine junk had to keep running until 1976. I have vague memories of around 1963 of a bunch of Pennsy MP54's parked near the mail siding west of Jamaica. Perhaps they had some spare parts LIRRR's own MP54's and P54's needed, but I can't imagine what except maybe resistior grids, brake compressors, trucks, or cab contol parts. |
