MP54's were built 1908 -1930. 2/3rds of them got a rebuild in the late 1950's mainly the ones from 1923 and up. So there were good ones and bad ones. But Ronan walked in one day in 1967 and ordered rare spare parts store rooms to scrap their inventiory. That is what caused the fleet to fall apart. The 4100 and 4900's of 1930 probably should have been cherry-picked and sent to Staten Island in 1971. There was also ongoing labor strife going on in the shops in 1969.I remember one sumemr Sunday, out wth my family, there were so disgusted with the M-1's, of which there were about 100 at the time, almost everything running was an MP54, and eveything ran fine, except we sat outside Jamaica for a while as an M-1 had broken down. |
