They didn't, on the LIRR anyway. I remember those days well. They had serious growing pains accompanied by shop forces that were unacquainted with the new animal.
This resulted in many overtired MP-54s getting a stay of execution, being held together with the equivalent of duct tape & chicken wire.
The resulting near chaos in the scheduling resulted in dozens of train annulments when the MP54s could answer the bell & thousands of late commuters. On all news WINS & WCBS, they would have news, weather, sports & LIRR train cancellations all together in their daily broadcasts
