PHOTOS: Colorful Norfolk Southern engines

The vast majority of the NS locomotive fleet is black.
The Norfolk & Western Heritage Unit led NS 39G departing South Jersey on Saturday.

It was a long train with four engines up front

and two distributed power units

NS had many of their C44-9 fleet rebuilt to AC44C6M with their DC-to-AC conversion program. The first two, 4000 and 4001, were painted with blue cabs. 4001 led 39G on Sunday.

Bonus: NS has divested nearly all of its ex-Southern Railway high short hood GP38-2 fleet. A survivor works Conrail Pavonia Yard's classification yard, formerly the hump job until the hump was removed. The engines moved past 36th Street Pennsauken to move to the class yard track. The pair is remote controlled from the conductor's belt pack.

They came back later as far as 36th Street with a cut of tank cars. CSX SD40-2 8828 is paired with NS 5223, which was built in 1977 as Southern Railway 5223.
