PHOTOS; 2 Hour Show

The RDC train to Jim Thorpe will be leaving North Reading PA at 9AM every Saturday & Sunday till Labor Day weekend. Return is at approximately 6PM:

The overhead bridge is from the abandoned Pennsy Schuylkill Valley Branch and the signal in the distance guards the main RBMN interchange with Norfolk Southern. RDC1 #9168 gets the day off:

At 9:03 RDC3 #9166 & RDC1 #9167 pour it on rounding the curve after leaving the station:

OK Rich enough of the smoke show:

About 20 minuets later 2 MP15DCs drag the cars left by various Norfolk Southern trains at Reading Yard. Presently this is the only "scheduled" pickup of the day but extras will be called from time to time to go to Reading at night:

This was originally 4 track territory but by the time Conrail arrived one track plus a siding was all that remained. Reading and Northern revived the anthracite business spectacularly and brought all 4 tracks back to assemble coal trains for NS at the lower end of what became North Reading Yard. The MPs are crossing over PA61 on a bridge upgraded as part of the Reading systemwide ROW modernization program:

The Depression did not stop the RDG from executing their plan which included the Philadelphia suburban electrification. Most bridgework was done by Phoenix:

The coal left Friday so the yard is empty, allowing these shots to be taken. The north end opens to 7 tracks and is used to sort carload freight for trains like the North Reading Fast Freight which will run to Pittston to feed the locals that serve the customer base. The Turn slowly passes me and faces a mostly empty yard...but not for long:

I counted an even 70 cars including some empty hoppers:

By 11AM the NRFF power is pumping up the air and will double the train together after the switchers move out. Not bad for a roughly 2 hour show:

On the point (in bad light) is "Fast 50" SD50-2 #5019:
