My father had to juryrig his '53 Pontiac after the starter contacts burned out inside the ignition switch. There was no starter solenoid, but rather a pair of heavy starter cables that connected to the ignition switch. I don't remember when it happened; I must have been very little. My father went over to Sears, bought a heavy-duty spring-loaded push button, hooked the starter cables to it and taped it all up. Problem solved. I still remember how he'd turn on the ignition (that part still worked), reach down and push that button to crank the engine. Someone tried to steal that car once, but apparently didn't notice the button. |
