I learned to drive in a 1952 Dodge with a semi-automatic transmission. The clutch was needed only to change the gearshift lever. So after you started the car, and you were out of your parking place, you pulled the lever straight down and you were in 3rd Gear, after letting the clutch out.
You accelerated then when you hit 20-25 mph, you took your foot off the gas pedal, and it shifted into 4th gear with a "clunk". You could also use 1st. and 2nd gears by pressing in the clutch and shifting to the L position. Drive in 1st, let off, and it would "clunk" into 2nd.

I don't remember, but I think if you were in 4th and a steep hill came up, it would automatically shift into 3rd gear due to engine vacuum.
So 95% of your driving was just gas and brake. When the car came to a stop,it always went back to 3rd gear.

Later on , I drove a real stick shift car and learned all the ropes of that mode.

My last stick shift car was this '95 Dodge Neon. 95 Neon It was pocket rocket!
